Information on how to enter the IATA NDC Hackathon (the “Competition”) and the prize details form part of these terms and conditions of entry (“Terms and Conditions”). Entry into the Competition is deemed acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. Entries not in accordance with these Terms and Conditions are deemed ineligible.

The Sponsor of the Competition is the International Air Transport Association (“IATA” or the “Organizer”), having its Head Office at 800 Place Victoria, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H4Z 1M1 and its Executive Offices at 33, route de l'Aéroport, P.O. Box 416 CH-1215 Geneva 15 Airport, Switzerland.



The following terms will have the following meaning in the present Terms and Conditions (TCs):


“API” means Application Programming Interface. APIs define a standardized language to access application functionality from external code.


“Competition” means the developer event called “IATA NDC Hackathon” organized by IATA, starting on May 27th,2016 with participant onboarding/ ideation and ending on May 29th 2016 in Berlin (Germany) with the final Hackathon.

“Hackathon” is a combination of the words "hack" and "marathon", where "hack" is used in the sense of exploratory programming. Hackathon refers to the final phase that will take place during the Competition and during which Participants (as defined below) will have to create innovative solutions related to NDC and/or its Partners’ APIs with the goal to win cash prizes and/or the possibility to be incubated and travel to IATA Business Travel Summit in Geneva (Switzerland) and IATA World Passenger Symposium in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the presentation of their solutions.

“Ideation Phase” means the phase where the Participants start to bring in ideas, which need to be reviewed, commented and steered.


“Online Incubation” means structured development and refinement of an idea of a Participant. Mentors and specialists (e.g. Designers, Project Managers) help the Participants to improve the idea towards a viable product.


“Participant(s)” means any individual or company that is registered to participate to the Competition.


“Partners” means the selected companies by the Organizer that will contribute to the Competition by providing for instance mentoring services/APIs/products to the Participants.


“Solutions” means the innovative solutions created by a Participant during the Hackathon.



The registration for ideation and the Hackathon (together “Competition”) will be rolled out in three different phases:


First phase: Ideation - The first phase, consisting of an ideation platform (“Ideation Platform”), will permit Participants to register online, submit and discuss ideas in relation to the theme of the Hackathon with a panel of experts and other Participants. The goal is to allow Participants to adjust ideas they want to build in the Hackathon by getting feedback from other Participants and Mentors. This phase of the contest will end with an in-person ideation session in Berlin, Germany where ideas will finally be shaped before implementation and the Partners inform the Participants about their business models and APIs.   


The second phase: Hackathon - The second phase, consisting of 40 hours in Berlin, Germany.

The Hackathon, to be held on 27th, 28th and 29th May 2016, will permit Participants to pitch their ideas, designs and develop products with accessible data and technologies, in order to win a prize as described in section 12.

The third phase: Online Incubation - The third phase is only eligible to winners (from 1st to 5th positions).This comprises of a 8 week incubation period to be held online. It will consist of an educational module (webinars, 1-on-1 sessions) and progress milestones, which the Participants have to achieve to successfully complete the third phase



● The Organizer is in charge of organizing the Competition.


● The Organizer will provide for the registration website and mentor supporting Participants during the first phase.


● The Organizer will organize the Hackathon and set up a jury deciding on the winners of the Hackathon (the “Jury”).


● The Organizer retains the right to change, supplement, add provisions or remove provisions from these Terms and Conditions.



The Competition will take place from 27th May 2016, starting with an opening introduction and will continue until the 29th of May 2016:

1st phase: Ideation Platform

The Ideation Platform is available under “”. Registration will open on the 13th of May 2016 and last until 26th of May 2016 (“Registration Period”). The Organizer will invite each Participant who registered to the Hackathon via email, to create an account on the Ideation Platform. The phase will be ended by the idea pitch session on 29th of May 2016 in Berlin, Germany. There a) groups can still be formed b) groups already formed can present their concepts and network with the Competition Partners.

2nd phase: a total of 40 hours Hackathon from 27th May to 29th May 2016 in Berlin, 

Germany. Detailed schedule available on the registration page.

3rd phase: Online incubation


The Online incubation will be held exclusively online from 30th of May 2016 to 31st of July 2016 without physical interaction. It will partly continue on the same platform used for ideation, but mostly comprise webinars, 1-on-1 coaching and digital interaction with mentors provided by the competition partners.



A Participant is eligible to enter into the online registration if he/she meets the following requirements at the time of entry:       

● Either a natural person or an institutional body

Natural persons:          

- Participant is a natural person of at least 16 years of age.

- Ideally marketer, developer, idea generator, designer or data analyst.


Institutional body:       

- Any company willing to participate. 

- A responsible team leader must be named, stating that he/she is able to take  

decisions in name of the company to bind it.

● By registering on the ideation platform, the Participant agrees:


- To abide by all the rules stated in these TCs.    

- To release and hold harmless the Organizer, its subsidiaries, affiliates, employees, agents and Partners from any and all liability or any injury, loss or damage of any kind, arising from or in connection with the Competition or any prize won the Participant is responsible for.        

- To agree that all The Organizer's decisions will be final and binding on all matters related to the Competition. 

- To agree that all the Jury's decisions will be final and binding on all matters related to the Competition.

- That any photo or video containing his/her likeness or voice, as may be shot or filmed during the Hackathon, may be published by the Organizer, in part or in full, with or without stating the Participant's name, on any media, including but not limited to the Organizer's website and or Youtube page, at the Organizer's sole discretion. This authorization will be given for 10 years and shall be valid Worldwide. 



Signing up for the Competition shall be made through the official website at, which requires an email address, name, and ticket type (marketer, data analyst, developer, idea generator or designer).


Each Participant who has registered to take part in the Hackathon at “” will receive an invitation from the Organizer, via email, to sign up on the Ideation Platform.       

Registration on the Ideation Platform will only be possible by invitation.


Once the Participant has received an invitation, it will be able to create an account on the Ideation Platform by filling out all of the required fields.

Access to the Ideation Platform and the registration is free of charge.


Regarding the submission of ideas in connection with the theme of the Hackathon, the Organizer reserves the right to remove any inappropriate (see details below under item “General requirements for entries and participation“) or irrelevant content at any time. The Organizer will inform the respective Participant of such removal.


The number of Participants is limited to the capacity of the venue of the Hackathon in Berlin, and the Organizer may close registration before the end of the Registration Period in case the maximum number has been achieved.


The Organizer may prolong the Registration Period at his sole discretion. In such case the dates of the Hackathon will be postponed accordingly. The Organizer will inform the registered participants in due course before such prolongation.



In the Registration Period, participants have the following opportunities:


Submit ideas to a panel of Mentors being experts that have been selected by the Organizer for their business expertise and experience (“Mentors”).


Ideate on, develop and enhance their ideas they would like to present and build during the 40 hours Hackathon.


Participants agree that their submitted ideas:


- Will not include illegal, vulgar, offensive, racist or otherwise inappropriate or discriminating content;


- Will not encourage the use of controlled substances, including but not limited to alcohol and drugs; the Organizer reserves the right to disqualify, at its sole discretion, any Participant which doesn’t comply with the above-mentioned criteria.


The Ideation Platform Mentors:


Upon Participants’ requests, or upon their sole discretion and at any time that they choose, Mentors will provide feedback to registered Participants’ submissions.


Mentors will be available online during UTC (Central European Time Zone) business hours to answer questions and to comment on ideas that have been submitted.


Mentors will receive notifications each time their panels are selected.


Mentors can comment on an idea or answer a question even if their panel is not selected.



The Jury for the Hackathon will be comprised of representatives of the Organizer and of Partners of the Organizer.


The Jury will evaluate the Solutions created during the Hackathon based on the demonstration and according to the judging criteria, which are listed further below. In the event of a tie, the Jury will deliberate to determine a winner.


The members of the Jury might change at the Organizer’s sole discretion and upon availability.


In the event of a conflict of interest, a member of the Jury may disqualify him/herself or be disqualified by the Organizer from passing judgment on a particular team or participant. Such disqualification shall not affect the judging or review of the team or Participant’s submission by other members of the Jury.


The Organizer will publish the Venue through the Hackathon website at the latest on 08th of April 2016.


Attending the Hackathon weekend is free of charge for the Participants. The Organizer will bear costs for the venue and catering. However, the Organizer shall not bear the costs of Participants’ travel to/from Berlin or accommodation.

Organizer will not to take any responsibility for any sickness, illness or injury caused to participants as a result of food and beverage consumption. Participants understand, accept, and take full responsibility for the potential risks and hazards of consuming foods and beverages during the Hackathon. In the case of dietary restrictions or allergies, it is imperative that Participants verify the ingredients. 


The Jury will select the winners of the Hackathon according to the following criteria, each of which will be scored on a 1 to 10 scale. In the event of a tie, judges will deliberate to determine the winner.

In the final demos, each participant will have 3 minutes to demonstrate their project and 2 minutes for questions and answers with the jury.


A detailed list of parameters will be provided by the beginning of the Hackathon weekend.



Prizes will be distributed in two separate phases as follows:


End day of Hackathon (29 May 2016):

Business traveler journey prize:

a) USD5,000 (five thousand American dollars) 

b) 2 trips (economy class ticket plus hotel accommodation) for the IATA NDC Business Travel Summit on June 21st & 22nd 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland, to showcase the results to an audience of 120+ people (IT providers, Travel Agents and Corporate Buyers)

c) Incubation phase of two (2) months, where the Organizer provides mentorship and technical follow-ups to the selected project. This is offered at the sole discretion of the Organizer at the end of the Hackathon weekend. 

Travel data prize:

a) 5,000 USD (five thousand American dollars)

b) 2 trips (economy class ticket plus hotel accommodation) for the IATA NDC Business Travel Summit on June 21st & 22nd 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland, to showcase the results to an audience of 120+ people (IT providers, Travel Agents and Corporate Buyers)

c) Incubation phase

Developer Prize:

a) 2,000 USD (two thousand American dollars)

Bonus prizes might be given out on the hackathon at the discretion of the Organizer.

End day of Incubation phase (week of 25 July 2016)

1st and 2nd Prizes:

2 trips (economy class ticket plus hotel accommodation) for the IATA World Passenger Symposium October 18-20th 2016 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to showcase the results to an audience of 700+ people (Airlines, IT providers, Travel Agents and Corporate Buyers). All entry requirements are the sole responsibility of the winners and the Organizer shall assume no responsibility as to the entry of such winners into the above-mentioned countries.


In case one of the winners is a group, the cash prize will be divided and distributed between team members.The Team will decide which 2 team members will be presenting the project.

Cash prize will be sent through bank transfers within three (3) months of the end of the Competition. Flight tickets and hotel reservations will be issued by the Organizer.

Travel will start and finish in the city and country of residence of winners. Proof of residence needs to be provided to the Organizer. Travelers are responsible for issuing and paying for their own visas in case visas are required.



Within the Competition, no assignment from the Participants on any part of their exploitation rights and the property of their projects is required. However, the Participants can propose to the Organizer or its Partners to acquire the usage rights for business purposes. The parties will have to formalize this transfer of rights within the framework of a written agreement.


For the avoidance of doubt, any data or material provided by the Organizer during the Competition shall remain the sole property of the Organizer and the Participants shall not have any rights in such data or material. The Participants are only entitled to use such data or material for the purposes of the Competition and shall not use it afterwards; this also applies in cases where the Participants have integrated the data and material in their works created during the Competition (“Work Results”).


The Participants expressly authorize The Organizer, to publish, to communicate, to expose and to disclose, divulgate and represent the submitted ideas and Work Results verbally, graphically or in writing, in any medium worldwide and without restrictions in time, and by any means, either present or future, free of charge, in relation to this Competition.


The Work Results shall, in no event, infringe in any manner or induce infringement of any third party intellectual property rights. Should the right from identified third party right owner not be commercially available, the Work Result may not be qualified to win the prize. The Participant undertakes to indemnify the Organizer against all claims asserted by third-parties against the Organizer due to an actual or alleged infringement of rights resulting from the use of the Work Results, as well as against all litigation costs (including reasonable attorney fees) required to defend the Organizer against such claims, unless the Organizer itself is responsible for the infringement of rights by its gross negligence or willful misconduct.



The Organizer is fully entitled to shorten, extend, modify or cancel the Hackathon should circumstances so require without any liability.


The Organizer is fully entitled to disqualify a Participant or a team which does not abide by the Rules or acts in any other way deemed inappropriate by the Organizer; such inappropriate behavior could for example be the taking of drugs or other illegal substances during the Hackathon, harmful and discriminating statements, hacking or manipulating or attempt to hack or manipulate the IT system or the data of the Organizer or other teams.


The Organizer and the respective subsidiaries and branches of the Organizer are not responsible and assume no liability for lost, misdirected or late submissions or for (i) electronic transmission errors, (ii) theft, destruction, change of or unauthorized access to submissions, (iii) technical problems, malfunctions or errors in the operation of any hardware or software which are necessary for the transmission of submissions or the planned Competition procedure, including computer viruses and bugs, or for manipulations, unauthorized access, scams, overload of the Internet or a website or any combinations of these, nor for other causes not subject to the inspection by the Organizer and the respective subsidiaries and branches of the Organizer. In case any of the above events occurs, the Organizer retains the right to take one or several of the following measures according to its sole discretion: to disqualify each person who manipulates the submission or voting procedure as well as to adjust, change, postpone or cancel the Competition.


ATTENTION: each attempt to intentionally damage a website or to undermine the legal procedure of the Competition is a breach of provisions under criminal and civil law; in such a case the Organizer retains the right to demand compensation from the concerned persons using all legal possibilities.


Participants, who are employees of a corporation, government agency, or an academic institution, are responsible for ensuring that their participation complies with any policies their corporation, agency, or institution may have regarding participation in contests of this type. If the Organizer has reason to believe that a Participant violated any of those policies, the Organizer reserves the right to prohibit the Participant from participating in the Competition or receiving a prize at any time. The Organizer is not responsible for any disputes arising between a Participant and his/her employer.


Also, the Organizer will not be involved nor shall it be held liable in case of litigation with companies who have developed the offered prizes. 


This Competition will be governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States. Any dispute arising between the Organizer and the Participants shall be governed by the courts of the State of New York (in New York city), excluding any conflict of law provisions. 




The Organizer reserves the right to verify the validity of entries and to disqualify any Participant which tampers with the entry process or which submits an entry that is not in accordance with the Terms and Conditions. The Organizer will not accept any late or misdirected entries.

The Organizer reserves to the right to cancel the awards or to award less than the total prize money. If, however there are at least three Participants, all prizes will be awarded. 

The Organizer’s decision in relation to any and all aspects of the Competition is final and binding on every Participant.

Disqualification of any individual whom the Organizer has reason to believe has breached any of the Terms and Conditions, or engaged in any unlawful or other improper misconduct calculated to jeopardize the fair and proper conduct of the Competition, is at Organizer’s sole discretion.

The Organizer is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer or online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any web site, delay or error in postal service or any combination thereof, including but not limited to any injury or damage to eligible Participants’ or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation in or down-loading any materials in this Competition. The Organizer is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, either caused by the phone user or for any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in this Competition, or for any technical error, or any combination thereof that may occur in the course of the administration of this Competition including any omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line or telephone, mobile or satellite network failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to or alteration of entries.

If, for any reason, this Competition is not capable of running as planned, including but not limited to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, international sanctions preventing attendance of a Participant, or any other causes beyond the control of the Organizer which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Competition, the Organizer reserves the right, subject to any written directions given under applicable law, to disqualify any Participant tampering with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Competition. The Organizer reserves all rights to recover damages and/or other compensation as may be deemed appropriate from such an offender.

In the event of war, terrorism, economic sanctions, riots, fires natural disaster or any other state of emergency, the Organizer reserves the right (subject to any written directions under applicable law) to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Competition, without any liability.

The winners will be announced at the closing day of the 2016 IATA NDC Hackathon in Berlin and at the end of incubation phase. All finalists and winners will be announced on the IATA website.
